AI and big data reshape Vietnam’s e-commerce landscape
Lai Viet Anh, deputy director general of the Department of E-Commerce and Digital Economy

As part of the Autumn Fair 2025, the Department of E-Commerce and Digital Economy under the Ministry of Industry and Trade hosted a forum on November 1 to discuss the role of AI and big data in fostering sustainable growth models for Vietnam’s e-commerce sector.

Lai Viet Anh, deputy director general of the Department of E-Commerce and Digital Economy, said that in the context of rapid digital economic growth, AI and big data are essential for e-commerce to truly become a new growth engine.

“AI is not merely a tool but a strategic transformation, enabling businesses to convert massive data into competitive value and exceptional productivity,” she said.

Nguyen Huu Tuan, director of the Centre for E-Commerce and Digital Technology Development (eComDX), noted that the digital economy operates on data and digital technologies as its primary inputs, driving innovation in business models and productivity optimisation. Within this framework, e-commerce serves as both a driver and a pillar of digital transformation.

He cited that global e-commerce retail sales are projected to reach $6.86 trillion in 2025, up 8.3 per cent on-year. Emerging trends include mobile commerce, social commerce, cross-border e-commerce, and smart logistics.

In Vietnam, e-commerce reached a market size of $25 billion last year, growing over 25 per cent on-year, placing the country among the top 10 fastest-growing markets worldwide. The sector accounts now for about 10 per cent of total retail sales of goods and consumer services, with prominent development directions such as green e-commerce, smart logistics, and omnichannel models integrating online and offline experiences.

“AI is driving a profound transformation in e-commerce, becoming an indispensable digital assistant that enhances business efficiency and delivers superior personalised consumer experiences,” Tuan emphasised.

For shoppers, AI suggests relevant products, displays personalised promotions, summarises user reviews, and recommends similar items for easier comparison and selection. For sellers, AI supports 24/7 automated customer service, optimises product images and videos, suggests featured products during livestreams, and broadcast schedules efficient times.

The AI in eCommerce Statistics 2025 Report indicates that over 80 per cent of online retailers have applied AI to boost business performance, with the global AI in e-commerce market projected to reach $8.65 billion.

In Vietnam, 66 per cent of businesses report using AI for customer communication, and 63 per cent employ it to acquire new customers. As a result, shopping experiences have become smarter, faster, and more personalised, helping consumers easily compare and find the most suitable products.

AI and big data reshape Vietnam’s e-commerce landscape

Do Thanh Huong, head of market research at Metric Data Science JSC, said that big data is becoming crucial for the growth of Vietnam’s e-commerce. Statistics from four major platforms (Shopee, Lazada, Tiki, and TikTok Shop) show that total market sales in the first nine months of 2025 reached VND305.9 trillion ($12.2 billion). That in the third quarter alone recorded VND103.6 trillion ($4.14 billion), up 2.6 per cent on-quarter.

Shopee continues to lead with a 56 per cent market share, while TikTok Shop maintains a remarkable 69 per cent growth rate, capturing a 41 per cent market share, reflecting the rise of short-form content commerce and youth-driven consumption trends. Data also reveals that Mall (official) shops, accounting for only 2.36 per cent of total stores, contributes up to 32.39 per cent of total revenue, highlighting consumers’ increased focus on product quality and authenticity.

Huong emphasised that in an intensely competitive market, leveraging big data is no longer optional but a mandatory requirement for businesses seeking to maintain an advantage. “big data firms enable to understand markets, forecast trends, and optimise supply chains, thereby enhancing profitability and productivity,” she said.

In a technological view, Nguyen Phi Nghi, head of sales at MISA JSC, stated that AI is opening new avenues for Vietnamese businesses in sales automation. “Models like AI Sales Agents can consult, answer queries, and close deals 24/7, helping businesses improve customer reach without expanding staff,” he highlighted.

Echoing this view, Truong Thi Minh Nguyet, product and solutions director at ACCESSTRADE Vietnam, noted, “AI empowers marketers to enhance content creation productivity, as the entire process from product discovery and video production to posting and customer care, can now be automated.”

Speakers at the forum unanimously agreed that the explosion of AI and big data is reshaping Vietnam’s e-commerce market. However, to seize this opportunity, it is essential to build a national data ecosystem, establish a suitable legal framework, and develop a high-quality tech workforce.

The synergy between policy, technology, and innovation will determine Vietnam’s ability to sustain e-commerce growth and advance towards a resilient, self-reliant digital economy in the AI era.

Taking place on October 23, the event gathered regional media, industry partners, and company executives to discuss how Michelin is integrating innovation, data, and sustainability into its operations as part of Michelin’s long-term growth strategy in the Asia-Pacific region.

Michelin showcases innovation at Asia-Pacific Media Day

The event opened with remarks from Manuel Fafian, president and managing director of Michelin Asia-Pacific, who outlined the company’s evolution from a tyre innovator to a global manufacturer of advanced materials and mobility solutions.

“Our ambition goes beyond performance,” he said. “We are building a future where every product, every solution, and every experience contributes to a better way forward – for people, for profit, and for the planet. Today’s Media Day is a showcase on how we are bringing this future to life.”

From the pioneering role in the 1899 electric land-speed record, to the current leadership in sustainable tyre technologies, Michelin continues to push boundaries.

The keynote sessions and workshops showcase Michelin’s transformation into a composite solutions powerhouse, with applications spanning mobility, healthcare, aerospace, and low-carbon energy sectors.

Cyrille Roget, Michelin’s Technical and Scientific Communication director, showcased the Group’s latest progress in sustainable tyre design, stressing the importance of life cycle assessment, bio-based materials, and optimised rolling resistance.

He noted that more than 80 per cent of a tyre’s ‘environmental footprint’ occurs during use, highlighting the need for comprehensive design and responsible production practices.

E-commerce platforms and social networks face stricter responsibilities under draft law
Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien delivers a report to the National Assembly on a draft Law on E-commerce. Photo: National Assembly

In a report to the National Assembly on November 3, Minister of Industry and Trade Nguyen Hong Dien said that the move seeks to institutionalise the Party’s new orientations on e-commerce and the digital economy, align with Vietnam’s international commitments, and address existing legal shortcomings. It is also designed to foster rapid and sustainable e-commerce growth, safeguard domestic production and consumer rights, and contribute positively to national socioeconomic development in the digital era.

According to the Ministry of Industry and Trade’s report, e-commerce in Vietnam has been expanding strongly, accounting for around 10 per cent of total retail and consumer service revenue in 2024. However, the sector still lacks a dedicated legal framework. Existing regulations have revealed various limitations, particularly in managing sellers, collecting taxes, combating counterfeit goods, and protecting personal data.

The draft law comprises seven chapters and 48 articles, introducing new provisions that mandate the identification of domestic sellers through VNeID and foreign sellers via legal documentation. It also defines responsibilities related to information transparency, transaction traceability, violation handling, and consumer protection.

It also expands the responsibilities of social networks that engage in e-commerce and integrated digital service platforms, along with provisions to prevent abuse of market dominance and ensure fair competition.

Under the proposal, domestic sellers will be required to undergo identity verification via VNeID, while foreign sellers must provide valid legal documentation. Livestream sellers and affiliate marketers will be subject to specific requirements on identification, information transparency, and consumer protection.

For foreign e-commerce platforms operating in Vietnam, the draft mandates the establishment of, or authorisation for, a legally competent entity within the country to handle tax obligations, dispute resolution, and consumer protection issues.

Reviewing the draft, Phan Van Mai, Chairman of the National Assembly’s Economic and Financial Committee, said the necessity of developing a stronger legal framework for e-commerce.

E-commerce platforms and social networks face stricter responsibilities under draft law

He recommended that the government further clarify the classification of e-commerce as a conditional business line and make corresponding revisions to the amended Law on Investment. The committee also called for a clearer distinction between pre-check and post-check conditions to ensure effective management.

Regarding platform operators, the committee proposed refining responsibilities to ensure they are reasonable, feasible, and tailored to the nature of each platform and its level of involvement in online contract transactions.

For social networks conducting e-commerce activities, the committee suggested defining their scope of responsibility based on specific functions such as online ordering, livestream sales tied to order placement, or payment and logistics support, to create proportionate regulatory obligations.

It also urged clearer delineation between livestream and affiliate marketing activities regulated under the draft law and those covered by other legislation, including the Law on Cyber Information Security, the Law on Cybersecurity, the Law on Advertising, and the Law on Consumer Rights Protection.

Finally, for e-commerce support service providers, the committee recommended clearer rules on their responsibilities and operating conditions, ensuring consistency with laws governing electronic transactions, postal services, payment systems, and banking, while maintaining practical and enforceable obligations.

Simexco Daklak honoured at international spice fair in India

The 53rd International Pepper Community (IPC) Annual Session, held under the theme “Rejuvenating Pepper Trade: Innovation, Equity, and Regional Resilience” , is bringing together industry associations and enterprises from the world’s major pepper-producing, exporting, and consuming nations from October 28-29. For Vietnam, the recognition of Simexco Daklak highlights both the country’s export achievements and its commitment to a sustainable spice trade.

At the event, Simexco Daklak is showcasing activities that underline its leadership. Alongside its participation in the IPC session and the International Spice Exhibition, the company is receiving the award for Outstanding Pepper Exporter of 2024. It is also deepening connections with importers, distributors, and partners, while unveiling digital initiatives such as an interactive online factory tour and a system enabling international customers to trace products and track orders in real time. Beyond trade promotion, Simexco is working with global spice organisations to advance sustainability, farmer empowerment, and environmentally responsible production.

The company was the first Vietnamese pepper exporter to gain Rainforest Alliance and Fairtrade certification in 2009, launching traceability and compliance with Maximum Residue Limits in demanding markets including the EU, United States, South Korea, Japan, and Taiwan.

This role as a sustainability pioneer has enabled Simexco to collaborate with leading global spice companies on projects promoting regenerative agriculture, carbon reduction, and resilient farming. Its consistent focus on quality and responsibility has shaped a unique advantage in Vietnam’s spice industry. In August this year, after years of ranking among the top six, the company rose to become Vietnam’s largest pepper exporter, a milestone now affirmed by the IPC award.

Simexco Daklak Honored at IPC 53 as Vietnam Showcases Spice Leadership

Established in 1993, Simexco Daklak is wholly owned by Daklak Party Committee, with charter capital of VND315 billion ($12.6 million). Based in Buon Ma Thuot city, the firm is also among Vietnam’s top three green coffee exporters, and is expanding into roasted and instant coffee products. Its three factories, Buon Ma Thuot, Binh Duong, and Hoa Phu, process up to 500 tonnes per day. In Daklak province, Simexco directly connects with over 40,000 coffee-farming household across 50,000 hectares.

The company’s financial results underscore its growth momentum. In the fiscal year 2024 (October 2023-September 2024), Simexco Daklak recorded consolidated revenue of VND9,401 billion ($376 million), up 38 per cent on-year, with after-tax profit exceeding VND85 billion ($3.4 million), a 24 per cent increase.

As industry leaders convene in India, Simexco Daklak’s award and participation underline Vietnam’s position as a major exporter and as a champion of a sustainable and innovative spice trade.

For Jabil, sustainability is the integration of environmental health, social responsibility, governance, and economic growth to create thriving, diverse, and resilient business operations for employees and the communities in which the company operates.

Jabil’s site in Ho Chi Minh is a shining example of the company’s commitment to building a sustainable future from the inside out.

Established in 2007, Jabil in Vietnam has made remarkable strides in creating a healthier environment, empowering its local communities, and nurturing a thriving, resilient workforce, areas Jabil believes it can make the biggest impact.

Environmental responsibility at the core of operations

Rooted in that belief, environmental responsibility begins from the ground up at Jabil in Vietnam. The site continuously initiates energy-saving solutions, waste reduction initiatives, and wastewater recycling to minimise its operational footprint.

Tree-planting campaigns and green workspace efforts such as the “Go Healthy, Go Smoke Free” campaign to raise awareness around smoking cessation, a “Green Road” initiative promoting public transportation and electric vehicle use, and other projects are carried out frequently at Jabil Vietnam to strengthen environmental awareness among employees and reduce the site’s CO₂ footprint.

In July, Jabil was presented with the Ho Chi Minh City Environmental Award 2025 in recognition of these efforts to build a cleaner, greener future.

“We treat sustainability as a long-term investment. Whether it’s through reducing energy consumption or optimising waste management, every effort we make can help shrink our environmental impact and improve operational efficiency,” said Khanh Nguyen, operations director at Jabil in Vietnam.

Beyond the factory walls, Jabil in Vietnam aims to make a lasting social impact. Through the company’s Jabil Cares community engagement platform, the site participates in volunteering, charity campaigns, and education-based initiatives throughout the year.

Jabil in Vietnam also contributes to Jabil’s global goal of giving back 500,000 volunteer hours annually to local communities and organises career workshops to inspire and guide the next generation.

As part of its initiative to support and invest in talented young leaders, each year Jabil in Vietnam supports around 20 university students in their third year and last year of studies in either science, engineering, technology, or business courses by covering their tuition and educational expenses.

Additionally, the scholars will also be offered training, internships, and potential career opportunities at Jabil.

“It’s inspiring to see how our teams continuously deliver quality for customers while also making time to give back to their community and develop themselves,” said Tin Phung, senior business unit manager. “This culture of purpose and progress is what makes Jabil’s Vietnam site special.”

A sustainable company starts with a sustainable workforce. At Jabil in Vietnam, employees are supported through internal scholarship programmes, structured development plans for engineering talent, and career path initiatives across all levels.

Special focus is placed on creating an inclusive culture, where women are encouraged to pursue leadership roles and all employees are given opportunities to grow. This strong people-first culture earned Jabil in Vietnam the Sustainable Workplace Award 2025 and a place among the Best Companies to Work For in Asia 2025 by HR Asia this August.

“At Jabil, sustainability is both a responsibility and a strategy,” said Huu Binh, senior finance controller at Jabil in Vietnam. “We believe our success lies in how well we care for our environment, our people, and our communities. These achievements are a reflection of the collective heart and effort of our entire team.”
